「今重要なのは、次の選挙で誰が勝つかではない...重要なのは、新たな雇用や産業が根付くのがこの国なのか、他の場所なのか、ということだ」
"At stake right now is not who wins the next election...At stake is whether new jobs and industries take root in this country, or somewhere else."

　来年大統領選を控えるオバマ大統領は、演説の中で「未来を勝ち取る」"win the future"と繰り返し、技術革新"innovation"や雇用創出"creation of jobs"を訴えた。今回取り上げた"at stake"は問題点や重要な点を強調するときに使う。"What's important is..."や"The nub of the matter is..."としてもＯＫ。何が問題点なのか知りたいなら"What's in question?"や"What's at issue?"と言おう。"at stake"には「～がかかっている」という意味もある。「優勝がかかっているのでチームは一生懸命プレーした」は"My team played hard as the title was at stake"になる。「私の首は成功するかどうかにかかっている」なら"on the line"を使って"My job is on the line if I don't succeed"と表現できる。
